OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio's DJ Sandra Dee interviewed New York actor and singer, Caitlin Mesiano, who was born with a unilateral cleft lip. During her early years, she experienced bullying and was made to feel like an “other”. Following her surgery, as she entered adulthood, Caitlin began to use her voice and talents to educate others and raise awareness regarding cleft palate. 

 

Now she serves on Smile Train’s Cleft Community Advisory Council, which works to strengthen the U.S. cleft

Boosie’s recent tweet towards Lil Nas X, and how he believes it’s okay to go on the internet and speak hate speech towards people who have caused him no harm. I dive right into speaking about heterosexual’s, heterophobia and what it really is because many people believe it’s an actual thing occurring in today’s time, when it’s not to a certain extent. The LGBTQ community only calls people out when they are blatantly hateful towards them. Other than LGBTQ+ issues, we dive into Sexism and how it affects everyone including men. I also discuss the rampant mistreat of women recently in the aspects of men harassing, killing, and physically abusing women over something as petty as rejection. I talk about Jada Pinkett Smith the woman who is married to Will Smith, the head of the Red Table talk show, the woman who is being flamed on Twitter for embarrassing her own husband not once but twice.

We have a new guest this time around Ashley, a college friend who I spend most of my time with talking wanted to be on my show. Trust me you guys are going to love her bubbly personality. Besides just gay men we talk about the denial of some women being biphobic of bisexual men because they believe they are most likely to cheat and so on. We adults, teens, and children always find ourselves on social media drooling and craving drama. I mean, who doesn't? But the real question at stake is why and how does social media have such a tight grip on us? The first thing we do when we wake up is always grab our phone to see if we have any new messages. We surf Instagram to look at other models who most likely have their photos edited creating a false sense of perfection. Continuing on from just social media have an impact on our mental health I wanted to shed light on parents disciplining their children harshly and what effects it could have on your children in the future. Plus, we discuss if boys and girls should be raised the same, and Travis Scotts Concert aftermath.

“SUNY Old Westbury Resident Life and Assault”

Today we have a guest Named Tori who will be speaking about safety tools for women if any harm was to come their way. Tragically there have been rumors going around about a student being sexually assaulted on campus after police activity occurred on SUNY Old Westbury Campus, Woodland Dorms. I wanted to spread awareness of this alleged incident to tell everyone we need to look after one another even if we are strangers, especially the ladies on campus. Not only should it be SUNY Old Westbury women looking after one another, it should be outside in any public place for example another assault occurred on the Bronx Subway of a woman being attacked by a man after rejecting his advances Wednesday night, according to police. Plus, we talk about Kyle Ritten’s court case, what coming out means and why people do it?, and Zac Stacy's domestic abuse charges.

“Cancel Culture”

Things are boiling down to the end of my college semester, and things are getting rough for students especially after the outbreak of COVID. I came to a realization that the American education system is somewhat flawed in some aspects such as standardized testing, SAT and ACT exams. Yes, I know the American education system is one of the best, but I believe we could do better. Moving on from American education I wanted to reopen a conversation I had before with Ashley when it comes to abortions, and what it is. Including the Texas abortion law that screams patriarchy in today's society. We also discuss cancel culture and Dave Chapel's recent controversy.

OWWR & NY PROJECT HOPE TALK ABOUT COPING WITH CHANGES BROUGHT ON BY COVID-19!

 

OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio, DJ Sandra Dee interviewed NY Project Hope for this edition of “OWWR Spotlight”. NY Project Hope is an organization that helps those affected by COVID-19. OWWR interviewed three trained Crisis Counselors Angelique Kinley, Taysia Simpkins, and Christina Reilly. One of the many goals of NY Project Hope is to help individuals understand reactions, and help people manage and cope with changes brought on by COVID-19.

OWWR'S "BETWEEN THE LINES", WITH MELISA WRIGHT - EPISODE 5!

In this episode, I wanted to talk about the effects of environmental racism. I sat with Monique Fitzgerlad of BLARG, (Brookhaven Landfill Action and Remediation Group), an activist organization started by community members affected by the Brookhaven Landfill. BLARG advocates for the removal of the Brookhaven Landfill, and complete restoration of the land and communities impacted by the years of pollution exposure. Together, we discussed the history of environmental racism in America, and how it has impacted her community. It's a powerful history lesson on the landfill and on the town of Brookhaven before colonization, a story that I wished I'd known sooner. We also discussed the efforts made to combat the harm the landfill has generated in Brookhaven's communities. Bellport's community garden is a powerful form of resistance by BLARG to take notice of this garden was created by the neighborhood to combat pollutants in the air and to provide fresh produce to people in need.

Working with Bellport residents, BLARG is starting a project this summer to expand and improve this community garden. One-third of the waste at the Brookhaven landfill is compostable, and BLARG is working to reduce those numbers while simultaneously restoring the air and soil of Bellport. ALCC, (Anti-Landfill Community Composting), is a project aimed to reduce landfill expansion and create more garden beds through residential composting. The project kicked off on June 5th, and BLARG is looking for volunteers! Let's do this together, Long Island!

OWWR'S "BETWEEN THE LINES" WITH MELISA WRIGHT - EPISODE 3!

On this episode of "Between the Lines", in light of the recent events of the Derek Chauvin trial, I wanted to address racial trauma--more specifically Black trauma. Being Black in America is carried with the weight of racism, discrimination, and aggression. The mental, emotional, spiritual, and even physical injury behind Black trauma is something many of us may not realize we are carrying. The overwhelming names of victims that were harmed and killed by the hands of law enforcement have almost become the norm when we turn on the news or check social media. Our guest is Cristen Williams, founder and president of The Black Women Collective. We dive into our feelings and thoughts on the Chauvin trial and the effects of Black trauma. 

We also address the trauma of being a Black Woman in America--dealing with the combined issues of racism and sexism. We wanted to focus on Black women especially today, as Black women as a collective try to enjoy our existence, 'just wanting to live and be', while trying to navigate through the emotional cost of what it means to be a Black women in America. Black Americans should not be seen or treated as victims, and must continue to be resilient. Members of the black community must continue to support one another and combat the systems made to oppress, while also addressing issues that effect Black communities. This fight isn’t just about making change— it’s also about healing.

OWWR’S BETWEEN THE LINES WITH MELISA WRIGHT - EPISODE 4!

 

Today’s episode highlights the activism that is happening right here on Long Island. My first guest is criminal law attorney Fred Brewington, who runs an attorney firm Nassau county. Mr. Brewington is also an active member of LIAFPA, the Long Island Advocates for Police Accountability, an organization that created a 12 step proposal called The People’s Plan that completely reimagines the system of policing on Long Island. It is such an amazingly detailed plan, and touches on all aspects that facilitates an effective policing community. It has been ignored by Nassau County, but members of LIAFPA continue to push for this reform. For those interested in playing an active review the "People’s Plan", and petition if you are inclined.

 

 

Our second guest is Rachael Hu, a strong supporter of the "People’s Plan", and member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Long Island. We discuss the history of systemic racism in America, in its effects on both Black and Asian communities. She makes a powerful connection, highlighting white supremacy in its connection to capitalism. Rachel makes a compelling argument that to erase racism and systems of oppression in America, the working class must stand in solidarity to eradicate Capitalism.

OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio presents "Between the Lines", episode number two. As you know, our podcast is about anti-racism as part of a partnership with the Masters in Liberal Studies program at SUNY Old Westbury. The goal of this podcast is to create a platform, that takes part in anti-racist action by sharing information, discussing ideas, and sharing perspectives. This podcast series will feature a variety of guests including members of SUNY Old Westbury, and activists in our community taking a stand against racism.

In this second episode, we explore how social activism has evolved over the last generation. We had the honor of having two guests on this episode. The first guest, Gabby Pardo, is an editor for a Millennial/Gen-Z-based news outlet called Shades of Long Island. Shades is an online news platform that focuses on creating content for Millennials and Gen Zs, highlighting the local issues and voices on LI. Our second guest is a videographer and aspiring filmmaker, Kris Dorval. He is the creator of the short film, The Mvmt, which captured a series of Black Lives Matter protests that was held on Long Island during the summer of 2020. We discussed the motivation and impact behind his film, as well as the significance of how modern technology enhances justice by creating more accountability for law enforcement and public servants in today’s America.

OWWR SPOTLIGHT: MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AWARENESS MONTH FEATURING THE PARALYZED VETERANS OF AMERICA!

 

 

 

On OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio, listeners were reminded that March is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month by DJ Sandra Dee, as she interviewed the Paralyzed Veterans of America, (PVA), on "OWWR Spotlight". In this episode she interviewed two Veterans, Iraq War Army Veteran Jennifer Steele, and Air Force Veteran Karla Clay. The PVA helped them become more independent and stay physically active while living with MS. These incredible women spoke about how the PVA has helped them become more involved with sports, and how they volunteered with educating other Veterans. They shared their personal experiences and stories on their service, Multiple Sclerosis, and how the PVA has helped them in their personal lives.

NYS GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO BRIEFING ON COVID-19 RESPONSE; THE PRESS CONFERENCE CONCLUSION AFTER 111 DAYS!

 

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced global public health experts have cleared New York City to enter Phase Two of reopening on Monday, June 22nd, 2020, Business guidance for Phase Two of the state's reopening plan is available here.

"I am so incredibly proud of what we all did together and as a community. We reopened the economy and saved lives, because it was never a choice between one or the other, it was always right to do both," Governor Cuomo said. "We showed that works in New York. We owe thanks to so many people, to our heroes, the healthcare and essential workers, to our legislature, our colleagues in New Jersey, Connecticut and neighboring states, local governments, the Army Corps of Engineers and most of all, to the great people of the state who rose to the occasion and did what they had to do." Out of the 79,308 tests conducted in New York State yesterday, only 796, or 1 percent, were positive.

NEW YORK STATE CONGRESSMAN TOM SUOZZI COMBATS COVID-19 WITH LOCAL AND FEDERAL AUTHORITIES!

Congressman Tom Suozzi (D – NY03) and Congressman Tom Reed (R – NY23) are joining a digital press conference with New York State Association of Counties  (NYSAC) Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario to talk about how New York’s counties and Congressional Delegation are working together in a bipartisan way to support local governments as they lead the response to COVID-19 and the reopening of their communities.

Both congressional members have been working hard with the rest of the state’s bipartisan Congressional Delegation to develop a Congressional solution that will help address the dramatic impact that the novel coronavirus has had on communities across New York State.

“Never has the county-federal partnership been as important as it is right now,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D – Long Island, Queens) will join fellow members of the Problem Solvers Caucus in a video news conference today, Monday, April 20, at 12:00 PM (ET) to release its Bipartisan Reopening and Recovery Back to Work Checklist, a multi-prong, data driven proposal focused on reopening America and reigniting the economy safely.

The 50-member bipartisan Caucus has found consensus on the set of recommendations focused on public health, economic rescue, and stimulus plans for our country’s immediate future. The plan will serve as guiding principles that the Problem Solvers Caucus would like to see incorporated and addressed in any future package(s) put forth by Congress to address the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
