Many people in the academic world agree that the cornerstone to any great learning institution is its library and research facilities. So, too, is the case at Old Westbury. The library at OW is a cornerstone of this institution. It is home to a strong selection of books, print articles, reference materials, and electronic journal subscriptions. The library faculty consists of more than six accredited librarians as well as reference and computing services personnel.
The library, which empowers students and faculty does not have the funds to buy pencils and paper. The current budget provides no money to invest in buying new books or subscribing to new articles and journals. There are not enough funds to upkeep even existing books. This 'forced' neglect means many books may fall apart because they haven't been re-bound. Old Westbury students will feel the pinch as the quality of their education is diminished: Outdated books and articles equals outdated infromation.
"It is really hard tyring to work and help students in these conditions," admits on library administrator, "but we do the best we can." Until budget constraints ease, 'the best they can' means staff must write on the back of recycled paper, bring supplies from home, wipe down books with wet wipes, encourage inter-library loans, and keep their focus on the good they bring to Old Westbury students.
Fortunately, library hours have not been cut. For now the library is open Monday through Thursday 8-11pm, Friday 8-6pm, Saturdays 11-5pm and Sunday noon- 10pm. The library can also be accessed on line at www.oldwestbury.edu/library/.
