On Tuesday, October 25th, 2016, the Sociology Department, OWWR, and Dr. Lee Blackstone (Chair, Sociology) hosted a live-streamed concert event featuring the experimental electronic group The Deep Sound of Maramures. The concert was a special broadcast, direct from Romania to SUNY Old Westbury; technical teams on both sides of the Atlantic worked to bring the concert to the students and faculty at SUNY Old Westbury.
The Deep Sound of Maramures features the compositions of musician and anthropologist Peter Gate, and combines inspiration from the traditions of Romania with modern beats, in order to conjure a sense of place of the Maramures region in northern Romania. Over 1,000 people in Romania and the U.S. viewed and enjoyed the transmission, which connected SUNY Old Westbury to Romania. The concert event grew out of Dr. Blackstone's research on music in Romania, which took place over the summer in 2016 and which was funded by a SUNY Old Westbury Faculty Development Grant.
