The SUNY College at Old Westbury Celebrated Their 21st Annual Awards Dinner!

On Thursday, October 14th, 2010, the SUNY College at Old Westbury's Alumni Association held the 21st Annual Awards Dinner at the Fox Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. The dinner celebrates the achievements of distinguished leaders in the various fields of education, community service, and 'The Outstanding Alumna of the Year'.

 

This years winners included:

Nancy Dunnagan, 2010 Alumna of the Year, 1974 CHIC & Elementary Education, Director of Financial Aid, Suffolk Community College

Michelle Glover-Brown, 2010 Excellence in Community Service, 1995 Health & Society, Enviornmental Health & Safety Manager, SUNY College at Old Westbury

Joseph Manfredi, 2010 Excellence in Education-Faculty, Lecturer American Studies, Station Manager Old Westbury Web Radio, SUNY College at Old Westbury

Dr. Contance Rhoden, 2010 Excellence in Education, 1998 American Studies, Assistant Principle Lawrence Road Middle School, Uniondale, New York

On Thursday, October 7th, 2010, The SUNY College at Old Westbury's President, Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, held a Town Hall Meeting. Dr. Butts updated the community with the state of the College, and actively participated with attendees with an open and lively discussion of the steps, "we must take to preserve our strengths and continue fulfilling our promise as a great institution".

Dr. Laurence Krause Reveals the Past, Present, and Future of Our 'Depressing Economic Crisis'.

On Monday, November 15th, 2010, Dr. Laurence Krause of the Politics, Economics and Law Department at the SUNY College at Old Westbury presented "Depression Economics 101: Everything You Need to Know about Depression Economics but were Afraid to Ask." Dr. Krause talked about the "crisis" of our economy today as well as the nature of the first Great Depression and how it relates to our failing economy today.  He goes through a simple model of a depression and the policies that surround it while defining the details, events, and outcomes of the past.

Dr. Jacob Heller Lectures at the SUNY College at Old Westbury During the Faculty Research Colloquium Series.

On Thursday, November 4th, 2010, Dr. Jacob Heller, Chair of the Sociology Department at the SUNY College at Old Westbury spoke to the college community for the Faculty Research Colloquium Series's. His lecture, "Understanding HIV/AIDS Conspiracy Narratives Using Rumor and Contemporary Legend Theory", sought deeper meaning and critical understanding of the perceptions of HIV/AIDS.

On Wednesday, October 13th, 2010, Author Ishmael Beah visited the SUNY College Old Westbury to feature his book "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier". Mr. Beah's book was required reading for the First Year Experience Program at the SUNY College at Old Westbury.

Andrew Cuomo Announces Landmark Agreement with SUNY to Protect Students at the SUNY College at Old Westbury!

On Thursday, September 7th, 2010, the SUNY College at Old Westbury welcomed Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as he announced the "Student Credit Card Reforms for Colleges and Universities". The reforms provide a road map for how shools can protect college students from falling victim to  problematic credit card marketing practices.  As his statewide investigation into student credit card marketing continues, Cuomo called on all New York colleges and universities to adopt the reforms.

 

Cuomo was joined with Chancellor of Schools, Nancy L. Zimpher, and President of the SUNY College at Old Westbury, Dr. Calvin O. Butts III to mark the event.
