Academy Award Nominee Scott Hamilton Kennedy Visits the SUNY College at Old Westbury!

On Tuesday, March 23rd, the SUNY College at Old Westbury welcomed Filmmaker Scott Kennedy for a discussion of his Academy Award nominated documentary  The Garden. This conversation was organized by Dean James Llana as a part of the School of Arts and Sciences series on sustainablity,  Spring Theme 2010.  

The event began with the trailer for The Garden followed with an introduction by Andrew Mattson from Media & Communications.  Scott Kennedy answered questions from Old Westbury students and discussed the film and the significance of The Garden as a story of community sustainability, urban politics, and grass-roots action.

On Tuesday, March 9th, SUNY College at Old Westbury Alumnus Karen Ranucci delivered her presentation, "Independant Media & Democracy". The lecture was sponsored by the School of Arts and Sciences for their speaker series, 'Alumni and Social Justice'.

Graduating from the SUNY College at Old Westbury in 1977, Karen is an Emmy award winner, and has a long career in television and radio. Currently, Karen continues to produce, and is a chairperson for Democracy Now.

The Rosies visit OWWR, on Tuesday Night Takeover!

The Rosies, an idependant altertnative rock group on Long Island stopped by Tuesday Night Takeover, (T.N.T.), on March 9th. Hosts Eammonn Dignam, and Evan Gray interviewed April Jimenez and Brock Gibson. They Spoke about their origins, former members, their favorite performances, and their benefit performance for The Little Shelter.

TNT is a student production on OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio that airs every Tuesday night from 7-10 PM. TNT features news, sports, weather, entertainment, travel, book review, special features and guest interviews.

The Road to Recognition is Rocky, JR Harris Tells Us Why!

On Tuesday, February 16th, JR Harris presented "Sambo or Superman: The Rocky Road to Recognition", he discussed how the accomplishments of African Americans explorers have often gone undocumented.

Using personal anecdotes and archival visual images, shared his own expedition experience to spotlight a group of African Americans whose labors in the wilderness on behalf of their country have been lost in historical oblivion. Harris used these examples to illustrate why, in order to sustain our holistic wellness, it is imperative that the struggles and triumphs of African Americans be uncovered and reported accurately in order to ensure that their contributions to the larger global society are properly acknowledged and appreciated.

Dr. Polyne Gives Us Hope For Entrepreneurialism in African America and Haiti!

On Wednesday, February 17th, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, Dr. Millery Polyne from New York University presented "Un-Sustainable Hope: Transnational Entrepreneurialism in African America and Haiti, 1934-1957."

Dr. Polyne examined the role of Claude Barnett, Editor-in-Chief of the Associated Negro Press and many more. He also discussed the tensions of intra-racial and transnational entrepreneurial ventures that sought to modernize Haiti and remember and actualize the economic and political goals of Haitian Revolution within an inter- and post-World War context.

The J.U.I.C.E. Project Re-Invents The Corner Store As A Model For Building Stronger Communities

On Monday, February 22nd, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, Dr. Angie Beatty and Sean Mckie presented "Re-imagining the Corner Store: A Model for Building Stronger Communities."  fueled by a 2009 Echoing Green Fellowship.

The J.U.I.C.E Project is a Saint Louis-based for-profit/nonprofit hybrid social enterprise that combats disease mortality in inner cities by re-imagining the corner store as a one-stop shop for nutritious yet affordable food stuffs, free exercise training activities, and media health literacy education and art  programs.In this interactive presentation, they explained how this innovative model allows us to empower undeserved communities to make healthy lifestyle choices.

New Orleans after Katrina: A Black History Month Presentation.

On Thursday, February 18th, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, Lisa Payton presented "Lifting Ourselves by Our Bootstraps: Rebuilding New Orleans four years after Katrina. Does anybody still care?" at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, as a part of Black History Month.

Lisa Payton earned  a Master's of Science degree from Columbia University School of Journalism in 2005. Later that year, she went to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, where she worked as a field producer for the Frontline documentary, "The Old Man and The Storm."The film chronicled one family's decision to stay in New Orleans and rebuild. It aired nationally on PBS in January 2009.
