Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman Speaks on Economic Slowdown

Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman, spoke about the Impact of the Economic Slowdown Resulting from the Subprime Contagion at noon on Wednesday, February 27th, in the Student Union.   

Lunch was served and Weitzman spoke about the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the budget of the SUNY System and SUNY Old Westbury.  Weitzman then opened the forum up to a question and answer session.

Hunger and Homeless Food Drive

Come and collect food with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) on Monday March 3rd and on Wednesday March 5th, 2008.  The group will meet in the Student Union on the 3rd floor in room 301J at 6pm and will leave at 6:30pm for the local communities where food will be collected.  Food collected will then be donated to a local food bank.

Women's History Month

February is almost done and that means Womens History Month is just around the corner. Beginning Monday March 3 and continuing throughout the entire month, the Women's Center at SUNY Old Westbury will be hosting events honoring female history makers.  Upcoming events include a "Read-Out," "Rediscovering Womens Sexuality" and "African Women Writers in Italy: The Shaping of a New Discourse," to name a few.

Sunday African Movie Night: " The Return Of Beyonce"

Join the African Student Union every Sunday night for "Sunday African Movie Night."  On Sunday March 2, 2008 the African Student Union will be showing Part II of Beyonce. The showing will be begin at 8:30pm in Hall 1 , 1st floor lounge. Light refreshements will be served. 

A Demonstration of Dancing, Singing & Drumming of Afro-Cuban Rhythms

The African History Month Committee and the Hispanic Latino Cultural Center of SUNY College at Old Westbury invite you to join them for a Demonstration of Dancing, Singing & Drumming of Afro-Cuban Rhythms by professional musicians Marianela and Mick Santurio with guest musicians and dancers. The event will be held in Multipurpose Room A of the Student Union on Thursday, February 28, 2008 from 12:00 to 1:00pm.

NYPIRG's Gears of the Machine

The Gears of the Machine is a weekly radio show sponsored by the Old Westbury chapter of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG).  Power of Students is on the air live every Tuesday from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.  The show is hosted by Natalie Lopez and Saima Anjam, the NYPIRG project coordinator here at Old Westbury.  This week's show featured:

• Wednesday Feb 20th Student action meeting. Students at the meeting discussed higher education, voter registration and, consumer protection. 

• The Importance of Social Security. What 18-24 year olds don’t know about this issue. How will Social Security effect those in that age group later in life.

• The Cost of Text Books.  $700 to $900 a semester, text books have risen in price 186 percent since 1986. Legislators decide that publishers must let Professors know about the availability of low-priced versions of text books they make mandatory in class.

Wallace Gallery Exhibition Reviewed in NY Times

The New York Times reviewed the Fred Holland Exhibition at the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery at SUNY Old Westbury in the February 24th edition.

In his review, Author Benjamin Genocchio commented:
"An abbreviated list of materials used in Fred Holland’s exhibition at the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery includes yams, wax, gold leaf, honey, soap, water, dirt and electricity. A sculptor and conceptual artist, Mr. Holland has turned the three large galleries here into a seductively cryptic meditation on impermanence, fragility and regeneration."

The exhibition will run until February 28, 2008.  Admission for the gallery is free and the exhibit will be open from Monday-Thursday from 1-5 p.m. and by appointment.

Free Writing Workshop: Research Writing -- Using Sources in an Essay

This semester, the Writing Center will launch a series of free Writing Workshops designed to help students develop and improve their skills in college-level academic writing.

From 4-6pm on Monday, March 3, the Writing Center will host a free writing workshop in room H-215 of the Campus Center on Research Writing and Using Sources in an Essay.

This workshop will help students develop skills for writing college-level research essays. Students will practice strategies for developing thesis statements, constructing argumentative paragraphs, incorporating source material, citing sources, and avoiding plagiarism.  Advanced registration is required.

Nassau County Comptroller on Subprime Crisis

Thousands of Americans are losing their homes through foreclosure.   Banks and the financial system have been affected by this mortgage crisis.
