Students went around the campus to plant flowers and pick up trash during NYPIRG’s Earth Day event on Friday April 27th. Guest speaker Michael Beherman, NYPIRG's environmental advocate, came to speak about NYPIRG Bigger Better Bottle Bill and other environmental legislation NYPIRG is pushing through New York State Senate. The Bigger Better Bottle Bill is a bill that would take the 5 cents deposit on recycled cans and be placed in the state's environmental budget.
At the Earth Day event, the mood was happy and earth friendly despite a rainstorm outside. Students held a sale of NYPIRG t-shirts just for $3 and made hemp jewelry. Professor Amanda Frisken headed the planting of bulbs atop the Academic Village. Students, as well as faculty, went outside on the campus grounds despite the in climate weather and picked up litter. Two trees made from recycled cardboard were set up, and students wrote pledges on how they would help save the environment on leaves and then stuck the leaves on the tree.
Students from Nassau Community College also attended this event. There was a variety of student representation at this event which included members from Pride, Student Government Association, Entertainment Revue, The Catalyst, Old Westbury Web Radio, Fraternities and Sororities, and the African Student Union.
