George Stefano, a distinguished teaching professor of biological sciences at SUNY College at Old Westbury, has been named to chair the new Committee on Research by the board of trustees of the Research Foundation of the State University of New York.
"Throughout his tenure with SUNY, Dr. Stefano has been a tireless advocate for developing free and open means of communication among administrators responsible for research programs, principal investigators and researchers, and the management of the state university's system-wide research consortium," said College President Calvin O. Butts, III. "His experience in training junior faculty to successfully compete for grant funding coupled with his personal success in lab-based research makes him the ideal candidate to lead the committee that will seek to articulate the views and needs of research operations across the state system."
The Committee on Research is charged with providing input to the Board of Directors on support for the research environment at the State University of New York's state-operated campuses. In so doing, the committee will interact with appropriate constituencies to facilitate quality research on the SUNY campuses, make suggestions on ways to enhance the research environment, foster and support competitiveness for external funding, and make suggestions on ways to raise awareness of, and support, technology transfer efforts.
Along with his academic and research responsibilities at Old Westbury, Stefano serves as vice chair of the Research Foundation of SUNY, as well as a member of its Executive Committee. He is currently principal investigator on research grants totaling more than $4 million, is the editor of Medical Science Monitor, as well as several other international journals, and has published more than 375 peer reviewed reports. His work is funded from The National Institute on Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the NIH-Fogarty International Center.
