SUNY College at Old Westbury Senior April Davis, a psychology major and resident of Staten Island, was among the 283 students honored today with a 2007 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, presented by SUNY Chancellor John R. Ryan.
The Awards are given out annually to students who earn a grade point average of 3.78 or higher and record a significant contribution to their campus or local community.
"Recipients of this year's awards have excelled academically and, in many cases, far exceeded even their own expectations in their pursuit of higher education and community service," said Chancellor Ryan in presenting the awards. "The Chancellor's Award for Excellence is given to the best and the brightest students across the SUNY System. I am pleased to see so many recipients this year from nearly all of our campuses. I commend the campus presidents and their faculty and staff for discovering and enhancing student excellence throughout the year."
In announcing her honor, Ms. Davis was presented a framed certificate and medallion, which she will wear during the College's commencement ceremony on May 20. Ms. Davis will graduate from SUNY College at Old Westbury, located on Long Island's North Shore in Nassau County, in May with a 3.8 grade point average. She is enrolled in the College's Honors Program and has earned entry into Psi Chi, the national honor society for students of Psychology.
Along with her academic achievements, Ms. Davis has served the campus in numerous ways, most notably as president for the past two years of the campus' Student Government Association.
The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized, for the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.
The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive university system in the United States, educating more than 417,500 students in 7,669 degree and certificate programs on 64 campuses.
