C.O.C.O. Meeting Updates

In a Council of Campus Organizations (C.O.C.O.) meeting, there was mention of two petitions circulation around campus.  One of the petitions involved the issue of how the club's budgets were allocated this semester.  Ms. Alysia Vasquez, SGA Governess of Social Affairs, announced that budgets of the three clubs that started the petition are now frozen until further notice. 

Ms. Julie Clarke Douglas, SGA Treasurer, explained that the budget committee bases their decisions on the budget form that is submitted to her.  If the budget form is missing information or does not break down the exact reason for the asked amount, the budget committee may not give that club it's requested amount.  Ms. Douglas also stated that a club can not request more funds until that club has completely used it's given amount.  The next budget committee meeting will be on Sunday, March 4th.   

To ensure all E-board club members information is updated, Ms. Vasquez asked all clubs to resubmit their club packet.  She also stated that it is the club's responsibility to update their information during the semester.  Ms. Vasquez announced that all clubs must submit plans for their weekend event by March 7th and that the event does not have to be on campus.  Any club that does not submit their weekend plan by the deadline will have their budget frozen.

Ms. Vasquez and Ms. Douglas asked all clubs to please submit any paperwork to the appropriate SGA member during office hours.  All paper must be given to them in person and not to slip it under their office doors.  Any forms that are found on their floor will not be viewed and thrown out.  They also announced that It is not part of their duties to make sure paper work handed in to the wrong member is redirected to the appropriate office.  Ms. Douglas stated that being a SGA member was not her top priority because she has a heavy course load and works full-time.

The next C.O.C.O. meeting will be Wednesday, March 14th starting at 12:00 p.m.  Ms. Vasquez asked all club officers to meet her in front of her office and she will direct them to the meeting.

New Program Celebration

Students, professors, and staff came together to celebrate the start of the Community Engagement and Partnership Center (CEPC) on Thursday, February 22nd.  The signing reception started with an informal meeting of the organization members participating with the Center.  President Butts III announced in his speech that the First-Year Community Engagement Program mirrors our college mission statement by having students volunteer around our community. 

Dr. Anker, First-Year Experience Director, expressed that this center is what SUNY Old Westbury is really about.  The idea of starting a civic engagement program was sparked after Old Westbury students decided to head down to New Orleans and help in the hurricane relief with the Common Ground Collective.  After her speech, Dr. Anker called each organization member up to the podium and sign a letter of intent with President Butts.

The reception ended with Mrs. Tonya Thomas, Director of the Community Engagement and Partnership Center, thanking everyone that helped to make the start of the center possible.

The Community Engagement and Partnership Center (CEPC) starts this semester on a pilot program.  CEPC goal is to have all First-Year Experience students take the First-Year Community Engagement Program in their spring semester.

CAMPUS PARKING AND MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS!

The following vehicle and parking regulations are in effect:

College community members operating a vehicle on campus should obtain a copy of the college CAMPUS MOTOR VEHICLE REGULATIONS booklet from the University Police Department or the Bursars Office.

All vehicles utilized on campus roadways must obey the New York State Vehicle and Traffic laws and be properly registered, insured and inspected. Violators will be cited.

All vehicles operating on college property must be registered with the college through the Office of the Bursar and a Vehicle Registration Sticker must be obtained and affixed to the driver’s side rear window of the vehicle. Resident students from New York Tech and Briarcliffe will be issued different registration stickers identifying the vehicle as being utilized by students from one of those Colleges. Vehicles parked on campus without such stickers will be ticketed.

Parking is permitted only in designated spaces throughout the campus. Vehicles parked in other then designated parking spaces will be ticketed and may be towed if they interfere with the normal operation of the college.

There is no parking in loading or fire zones, blocking dumpsters, walkways or other designated no parking areas. Violators will be subject to ticketing and towing.

There is no parking on the roadway circling the new resident halls, and vehicles parked on this roadway will be ticketed.

Vehicles that have in excess of seven unresolved parking tickets may be towed at the owners/operators expense. Such vehicles will be released only after the parking tickets have been resolved. The towing and storage expenses will be the obligation of the operator / registered owner of the vehicle.

Resident Student parking for both the new and old resident halls is located in rows 5 – 8 of the Campus Center Parking lot or in the southeast rear rows of the Clark Center parking lot. Resident Students regardless of College affiliation parking their vehicles in other areas on campus will be subject to ticketing.

A weather/snow or other emergency condition may cause the college to declare an Emergency Condition in which parking regulations may be altered to include the curtailment of all parking other than handicapped parking on the resident hall roadway. Written and electronic notification shall be made to the college community if such a condition exists. Vehicles in violation of this Emergency Parking Condition will be towed.

CTRL Time: SoYoun Jeong

On Feburary 20th, the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery had an opening reception for it's new exhibit called CTRL Time:  SoYoun Jeong. The exhibit shows different moment of Ms. Jeong life shown through different forms of art. Ms. Jeong, who is a multimedia artist, expresses her art through video, digital, photograph, sculpture, and other forms to bring out the imagery of each form.

The Toll of Dirty Air

Every year, power plants spew hundreds of thousands of tons of pollution into New York's air. In fact, power plants are New York's largest stationary source of air pollution. These pollutants are associated with a range of health impacts from asthma to developmental disorders.

It is known that ozone smog causes asthma attacks, but the latest research shows that ozone may actually cause the disease asthma. Over 510,000 asthma attacks can be attributed to ozone smog every Summer in New York. Our state has more children with asthma living within thirty miles of a power plant than any other state in the country. It is also known that soot is a respiratory irritant, but the latest research shows that pollution matter has the same effect on the lungs as second hand smoke. This matter causes over 1,800 premature deaths and 1,200 hospital visits in New York annually. New York is the third worst state in the country for the affects of particulate matter from power plants on public health.

Power plants are the largest source of mercury emissions. Mercury is a toxin that affects gross motor skill development. Of the 200 water bodies tested in New York, 34 have fish populations that are unsafe to eat due to mercury contamination. Ten percent of American women of childbearing age, 28 to 45, have such elevated levels of mercury in their system that it could be harmful to their developing child.

Hot Topics In The Faculty Senate Meeting

SUNY Old Westbury Students are not the only ones worried about the quality of campus life and administrative services. Both were the underline topic that had professors and administrators voicing concern in a full Faculty Senate meeting on Friday, February 16 which the main focus was retention and graduation rates.

The first presentation by Mr. Patrick O’Sullivan, Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, mentioned that services such as advisement, registrar, bursar, and financial aid still needed improvement. Mr. O’Sullivan also stated there is a need of improvement for internships in regard to better coordination, organization, and networking.

Ms. Mary Marquez Bell, Vice President for Enrollment Services, conveyed results from past surveys in her presentation in the meeting. High levels of dissatisfaction with the conditions of class rooms, conditions of buildings and grounds, academic advising, and service from Bursar, Registrar, and Student Activities were reoccurring themes in most of those surveys.

Ms. Mary Marquez Bell stated that the college has started improvements in regards to advisement, registrar, bursar, and financial aid. The college has purchased a program from Hobsons called EMT.  EMT, Enrollment Management Technology, would help create a more student friendly on-line service for these services and give students important notices.

Dr. Runi Mukherji voiced some concerns about the lack of personal contact with this type of system. She explained that evening and night students have expressed their frustrations on the lack of personal services in Bursar and Registrar at night. Dr. Runi Mukherji also suggested that there should be a step by step organization chart to inform students what to do from admission to graduation.

The issue of campus life and student engagement was addressed by Dr. J. Haynie, Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Haynie first stated what she witness at the Student Government Association town hall meeting. Students appear to be worried about the lack of parties on campus but could not offer more constructive ideas to socialize.

Dr. Haynie also noted during SGA’s town hall meeting that clubs and organizations seemed segregated. That Old Westbury may be the most diverse college in the SUNY system but the college is actually diverse in name only. Dr. Haynie explained her proposal of a pilot mentoring program which may improve the quality of campus life and help this problem.

How the residential students reacted to the quality of campus life was present in the last presenter for the Faculty Senate meeting. Ms. Jenine Skrabak’s, Assistant to the Dean and Campus Judicial Officer, stated that the number of cases the Judicial Office sees is about average to other comparative colleges. The numbers that differ are the cases that involve residential students. Ms. Skrabak acknowledged that this number is above average compared to other similar colleges.

The Faculty Senate meeting ended with many proposals and more questions on how to improve the quality of campus life and administrative services.

Basketball Playoffs

On Tuesday February 20, 2007 the playoffs began for both the men's and women's basketball teams.

The Old Westbury Mens team was successful in their home game against U.S Merchant Marine defeating them with a score of 78 - 70. The team was led by forward Divine Jackson who had a team high 19 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 2 assists and guard Garthlette James who posted a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers advance now to the conference semi finals at Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday February 22, 2007 at 8pm.

The Old Westbury Women's team came up short in their playoff match up against Stevens Institute of Technology 58 - 47. The Lady Panthers were led by forward Monique Midy who had a team high 12 points and center Ashawn Ferguson who added a game high 15 rebounds. The Lady Panthers end their season with a 13 wins 13 losses overall record and 5 wins 11 losses conference record.  For more information, visit the Old Westbury Panthers website.

If a radio staff member is not in the radio office, please place your press release/flyer in an envelope and place under the news room door.

What happens to the information I send?  We are a multi-media news room which means our production team will make a radio promo/PSA to air on the web radio, include it in our news show, and post it on our news website.
