Panthers Basketball Hits Victory

The Old Westbury Panthers demonstrated all the valuable lessons they learned over the weekend and took it out on the cougars of SUNY Purchase in a 92-62 win at the Clark Center. The Panthers look to head into this weekends game against Steven's Institute of Technology with Wednesday night's momentum as they square off on Saturday, December 2nd at 4:00 PM in the Clark Athletic Center. The Lady Panthers earned a hard fought victory over the visiting Hawks of CUNY Hunter College. A total team effort was put forth in a 55-50 home opening victory. HIV Testing Program a Success

Student Health Services had a great turn out for their free HIV testing program on Wednesday, November 29th.  It was so successful that students had to be turned down because the Long Island AIDS Coalition, the test provider, ran out of the test.  Student Health Services originally offered this test every week but had to stop because they no longer had the funding.  Their future goal is to offer the test to students once a month.  I was able to interview secretary Karen Carlen and RN Kate Honan from the Student Health Center about step we can take to stop the spread of HIV.  The use of condoms and more educational events through clubs were the top on their list.

Senate Votes Not to Use AMT

The student senate voted in favor of dismantling the Activities Management Team on Monday, November 27th.  This vote mirrored a original vote that was taken at an emergence e-board meeting that was held in a resident lounge around 11:00 PM on October 30th.  SGA ask the senate to dismantle AMT because of financial problems within the Student Government Association and the issue of college rules AMT may be breaking.  Even though the students are certified security officers, SGA is concerned that AMT is a high liability risk.  Susanne McLoughlin, Director of Student Activities, stated that SGA and Student Activities could not speak for past administration when asked why this was not a concerned in previous years.  SGA treasurer, Julie Clarke Douglas, explained that the college population and structure has changed drastically since AMT was first constructed.  She added that a security system that may have worked in the past may not work now.  It is still questionable how effective an outside security company will be during a campus party.  According to a sample invoice from M.I.B. Security, 1,440 dollars will provide for 8 security officers in a 4 hour span.  However, the invoice does not mention the size of the party for this quote.

Crime Alert

There have been two reported thefts of Honda Accord’s from campus parking lots this semester.   Additionally , there have been several attempted thefts of Honda Civics.   If any suspicious activity is observed in any parking lots the University Police Department is urging all to report it to the University Police immediately at X3333 from any on-campus phone or 516-876-3333 from any cell phone.

The University Police Department recommends that all operators follow the suggestions below.

Suggestions:

1.       Be aware of persons milling around the parking lots.

2.       Be sure that vehicles are locked.

3.       Secure any valuables out of view in vehicles and if possible remove them from your vehicles.

4.       Be sure you have your keys/registration with you at all times.

5.       If you have vehicle disabling devices USE THEM.

6.       Do not leave vehicles unattended for long periods of time.   Operators should periodically check their vehicles as well as change location where vehicle is parked.

2006 Town Hall Meeting

President Butts addressed the students, faculty, and staff of SUNY Old Westbury on Thursday, November 16th in a Town Hall Meeting.  After thanking every one for attending, President Butts gave a brief account of college affairs.  He also congratulated the Womens Center and the First-Year Experience Office on receiving grants for their programs.  The lack of campus events, the importance of student involvement, and details about the new academic building were also stated during the meeting.

The Latest on Panther Sports

The Lady Panthers Volleyball team finished 23-15 overall which is the best in school history. They surpassed last year's record for wins in a single season with a total of 23 victories. In addition, the Panthers received several all conference accolades; senior libero Stacy Dubin of Selden, NY, was named the co-defensive player of the year and senior middle hitter Jennifer Hoyt of Syosset, NY and senior setter Jennifer Ragone of North Massapequa NY were both named second team all-skyline.

The women's basketball team will begin the 2006-2007 season Tuesday, November 21st against Polytechnic Institute and the men's team will be in action on Saturday, November 25th at Long Island University Brooklyn. Catalyst on Hold Until Next Semester

Old Westbury's school newspaper, The Catalyst, won't be able to put out an issue until next semester. The paper was denied funding from the Student Government Association due to lack of proper paperwork being filed. However, plans are in the works to publish the paper online through an outside company. Another factor working against the Catalyst is that the Catalyst's editor in chief, Stan Talouis, resigned two weeks ago. The Student Government Association still has not commented on this matter.

Motion to Impeach

The motion to start procedures to impeach the Student Government Association Public Relations Manager was a topic on the senate agenda.  Ms. April Davis, President of the Student Government Association, presented the proposal to start impeachment procedures on the Public Relations Manager, Chris Dallas, for failure to carry out his executive duties.  The Motion was pasted and the impeachment trail will move on.  Chris Dallas was informed on November 9th that this proposal would be presented to the senate on November 13th.  Mr. Dallas was not in attendance during the senate meeting.

AMT Update

Another reason why SGA will not be using AMT were brought to our attention during a senate meeting on Monday, November 13.  The Student Government Association believes AMT is not allowed to touch students because AMT is a student run security company.  SGA wants to use an out side security company because the company would be fully insured to take any measures necessary to restrain an individual in a fight.  Members of the Activities Management Team feel that they can protect and restrain students in a non-threaten way due to paragraph two section one in the code for student conduct.  The June 2006 revised edition of the code for student conduct states "safeguarding individuals from harassment or physical harm" as a right for a student to enjoy.  SGA informed that AMT can still be considered a club if they obtain their own insurance.  Due to time constraints, only a few members of the Activities Management Team were permitted to address the senate. 

Questions of the logistics and financial feasibility of an out side security company were also raised during the senate meeting.  One security company told the Student Government Association that eight security officers is enough to handle a party for 450 people.  This estimate was based on a comparison of our campus to SUNY Stony Brook.  Detail of the actual cost and credibility of the out side security companies were not clear during the meeting.

Common Sexual Assault Myths and Truths on College Campus

There are many myths about rape in America.  Marissa Grubman of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence visited our campus to help clear-up some of the myths.  I was able to interview Ms. Grubman about some statistics, common myths, and the truth about sexual assault.  For more information, visit the Coalition Against Domestic Violence website.
