Many of the popular social media apps, like Facebook and Instagram, have introduced stories, but this is something we've seen before. One of Snapchat's main components of their app is stories, either from friends, or from events happening around the world.
The easily accessible camera on our phone has made it so the focus on social media apps are pictures and videos. Snapchat is unique, where you don't make statuses. Same with Instagram in a way, but you still have a description of your picture. Additionally, another key thing about Snapchat and it's stories is that it's only available on your phone, you can't look at your stories on a computer. With apps in the future, they could be phone accessible only, with a revolutionary app that everyone will be talking about. The only social media platform who doesn't have stories is Twitter, but will we see it in the future?
In 2006, Facebook was desktop friendly so people could share links and type statuses easily. With sharing pictures, you had to go the extra mile and upload them from your bulky digital camera. Before everyone had a smartphone, this was the norm. Now, everything is going mobile and visual communication has been the key not only for Facebook, but for all social media platforms. This is according to TechCrunch.
When Facebook launched their version of stories on Facebook Messenger, their VP of messages David Marcus said:
"I think the Stories format is definitely a format, the same way the feed is a format. In different contexts as a format, it just makes sense. In my book, it’s totally cool to look at what’s working out there and try to adapt it to the platform you have.”
Stories is definitely working for everyone, because it might just be the future of how we see updates from the people close in our lives.
