Are customers switching over thanks to the T-Mobile Tuesdays App?
Well let's take a look at what the app is actually about. It was first launched back in June of 2016 and now has about 10 million downloads. Every Tuesday (beginning around 5am in the morning) the app presents T-Mobile customers with 3-4 free products or services. Examples of previous freebies would be free Subway sandwiches, Lyft rides, digital magazines or T-Mobile merchandise. Not everything is free since there are usually 1-2 discounted items. Examples of those would be: $15 off an 1-800 Flowers or $2 movie tickets from Fandago.com. Even those aren't necessarily 'free' they certainly are a good deal. Over 27 million gifts have been redeemed so far and the T-Mobile Tuesdays app show no signs of slowing down.
So are these the reasons why customers are switching to T-Mobile? Well, maybe. There are more factors that go into switching phone companies rather than just wanting a free sandwich. But they certainly can and do help. According to TechTimes.com, January 24th of 2017 was the first Tuesday where people whose carrier is NOT T-Mobile will also be able enjoy the weekly luxuries. What this does is attract consumers with the app. Potentially leading them to checking out T-Mobile's service and products and ultimately switching. Expanding the range of users for the app may just be a new marketing mechanism. Which would come at no surprise, since carriers are constantly trying to sway customers.
Breaking technology news site, BGR.com, quoted T-Mobile's CEO John Legere on what he said in a press release that week. "The other guys don’t even know how to give you something without asking for more," said Legere . The communications business is a competitive one, yet John Legere boasts and then jokingly throws a shot at Randall Stephenson (CEO of AT&T) and Lowell McAdam (CEO of Verizon). "Personally, I’m gifting one of my T-Mobile Tuesday gifts to Lowell and another to Randall to say ‘thank you’ for donating so many customers to T-Mobile for so many years."
But we can't blame the guy for being so confident with the new marketing mechanism. "T-Mobile Tuesdays" as of now is the only app (from a mobile company) that allows consumers to receive free/discounted products and services. When switching mobile services, usually phone companies give you the basic offer of a free month's service or $50 off your bill. But not quite like what T-Mobile is presenting.
With the offers, both T-Mobile and the freebie providers acquire new business. Hint, hint: cross promotion. From personal experience of using the app, a few months ago there was an offer for a free Lyft ride. After seeing that it was legit, I kept redeeming and using it every Tuesday. I got so used to Lyft that I started using it OUTSIDE of the free rides. T-Mobile kept my loyalty while Lyft gained a new customer.
Honestly, the T-Mobile app is something worth checking out. And get this: today I received a large, one-topping Papa John's pizza for $0. Yes, ZERO ! So if free pizza doesn't have you looking for 'T-Mobile Tuesdays' in your phone's app store than I don't know what will.
