India is one of the fastest developing countries in the world. Their film industry has become a huge success, with Bollywood being the top money-making machine in the world . With the Indian film industry expanding, it has become no surprise when the Indian censors decided to ban 'Fifty Shades of Grey" from debuting in Indian theaters.
Reuters stated that the Indian censor has been receiving growing criticism in recent times. Leela Samson, who was the chairman for several years at the Central Board of Film Certification, resigned earlier this year after accusing the federal government of interfering with its decisions.
The film was modified in many ways, editing out the many sex scenes that were native to the film. Despite this, the movie was still rejected. India's film censors have a long history of barring movies and cutting scenes, including those that are deemed too racy or may cause religious offense.
Ariana Bacle of Entertainment Weekly also makes a statement by saying:
"The ban comes from government censors but the chief executive of India’s Central Board of Film Certification did not specify why the censors wouldn't approve the film."
At this point in time, it is to be recognized that the Indian government has an agenda behind what they are willing to show to its citizens. Although the film industry is growing, the Indian government has become more conservative on what it will allow its citizens to watch.
