As we know Africa is not as advanced in the technological world as other continents, but are drones and smart phones changing that? Drones and Smartphone usage in Africa has drastically raised and is a great thing for some and a problem for others.
Drones are now being used in Africa for multiple reasons but one of the reasons they are being used for good is to get a hold of news. According to Raymond Joseph of Xindex drones are giving journalists a chance to get news they would’ve never been able to get. Such as virus out breaks and people who are in need of water.
Smartphone’s are being used to test the water population of rivers in Africa. According to Joseph the African Media Initiative is "placing old smart phones submerged in clear plastic bottles in rivers in the area. Functioning as simple electron microscopes, the phones use their cameras to take regular flash-lit pictures. These photographs are then magnified and compared against images from an existing database to detect dangerous levels of E.coli."
Not all is being used for a good and that is getting noticed as well. All Africa a website devoted to covering the continent says the UN warned of drones. The site claims that drones are violating human’s rights and are dangerous. According to the site the use of Drones by the law enforcement is crossing the line. The site raises a question about the safety of people with drones instead of police officers. "The decreased personal involvement of police officers in the deployment of force raises the question, among others, of who is responsible if things go wrong."
Drones as a whole is being heavily debated in Africa. Even though it has its pros for journalist and the government we also see it can be harmful and violating. Just like here in the US drones tend to be a hot topic that sparks up much debate.
