Printed news has been our main news and media income for ages, but with the wheel of time spinning and the internet growing in vast numbers the question remains: do we really need newspapers anymore? So many news organizations are going digital making it 10x easier to gain ready access to what is happening in the world. Instead of having to wait for the newspaper to hit against your tree or front door every morning, you can just open up your laptop or turn on your phone or tablet.
According to swets.com "Amazon announcedin August 2012 that its eBook sales had exceeded that of their print counterparts. Print journal subscriptions were long ago eclipsed by their electronic counterparts, and now stand as the predominant format in terms of library purchases."
But the newspaper business does have seniority when it comes to news media as that is how it all started, printed news on paper i.e newspaper. But with the economy not doing so well and the expense of printing, online news has become a cheaper outlet for news sources. "According to the Congressional Research Service, advertising revenue accounts for 80 percent of newspaper income. Unfortunately for newspapers, corporate advertisers are relying more heavily on cheaper and more dynamic online advertising space. Likewise, print classified ad sections are being out-competed by websites specializing in classified ads, social networking and help-wanted listings. As a result of this trend and a weakening economy, revenues from daily newspaper advertising dropped 44 percent from 2005 to 2009. In fact, the only advertising medium to experience an increase in advertising revenue during 2009 was the Internet" states smallbuinsess.chron.com. Lots of statistics but it shows exactly why the newspaper organization s wearing thin! Any company will do what they can to use less money in order to earn more. If that means going viral then they would give the authenticity of the newspaper a second thought. Money is always the main motive.
There are still people out there who believe in the quality of a good old newspaper in the morning with some coffee rather than a computer; those who don't mold with the times. As well as the companies such as Newsday and The New York Times who still receive their well deserved respect as sources of news. So although printed news sources have been around for decades... is there even a point to waste all this money and paper when the internet is further a head in the race? You decide. This clip could help weigh in on the cause!
