A question that has been circulating around recently because of the ad campaign by United Nations Women, featured on fashiondesign.com that has offensive and sexist Google auto completes over women's mouths. People and organizations, UN Women, are taking notice of Google's automated searching and not standing for it.
In addition to this, Lancaster University in Germany has done a study regarding this sexism and racism and brought it to court against Google. The court has said Google must ensure terms generated by auto complete, which represent the level of questions people are asking, are not offensive or defamatory.
In a sexism article by Chris Taylor brings up the thought that, "For anyone who thought the Internet was a more enlightened place than the world at large, or that sexism was less of a problem in the 21st century, the ads are quite the wake up call."
Although Google has had some slip ups, a company spokesman sexplains that Google Suggest is an automated feature that aims to make searching easier by providing suggestions as you type, based on what other people have searched for previously. He goes on to say that, "We have filters to eliminate inappropriate suggestions, but very occasionally an offensive suggestion may slip through."
Is Google racist? Or is it really just still people that are racist? People shoot their fires but Google has a technical defense. Something will always offend someone and everyone wants something or someone to blame.
