Banned web pages in Iran that were once somewhat accessible to internet users might soon be walled off to the public, and even more difficult the access. Irans information and technology committee released a statement last month, declaring “Only legal and registered VPNs can from now on be used,".
VPN's or "virtual private networks" are used by many Iranians to gain access to blocked websites within the country. Social media websites such as Facebook are typically banned by the government for public use. Sites containing music, and even dating platforms have also been filtered by the government, making it difficult for the public to access. These VPN's have been the go-to source for Iranians looking to "by-pass" the system.
Since March, the Iranian government has taken somewhat control of the VPN ussage within there country. Soon they will be available for use through purchase, to maintain a tighter grip on public access to banned internet outlets.
