Citizens of the Kingdom of Morocco have taken to Twitter to tweet about the suicide of 16 year old Amina Filali that happened last year. #RIPAmina is the message they are tweeting to help gain global awareness of this terrible thing that happened.
Last year Amila Finali committed suicide by drinking rat poison because she was forced to marry her rapist. In accordance to Moroccan law, a rapist is allowed to avoid prosecution if he has an arranged marriage with his victim. Citizens or "netizens" of Morocco have been trying very hard to get the Moroccan government to get rid of this law. The movement has gained global awareness and alot of advancements have been made to rid this terrible law in Morocco.
One report has said that
"Netizens celebrated the announcement of the proposed changes, which may include a prison sentence of up to 30 years for rape of a minor. Many discussed the news with the hashtag #RIPAmina, which netizens had previously used to draw attention to Filali's death."
Another Twitter user has said
"@somiav writes: "Without media coverage of the #RIPAmina case from some Twitter users and Facebook, we would not be here, bravo to you."
My take on this is that I think this law should be changed, because no rapist should be allowed to avoid to jail if they marry their victim. They should be treated like criminals and have a trial and be sentenced to jail time instead of having an alternative punishment like this one. Hopefully the law will be changed in the future so their can be more serious consequences for rape.
