Is there a right way to tell a friend it is time to go? Before the social networks exploded in our society, people would stop being friends by giving the "silent" treatment or the "bad-boyfriend" treatment. Either one of them would stop calling the other or there was always an excuse such as "being too busy" to go out. Thanks to social networks such as Facebook, the idea of "defriending" has made it easier for friends to get the message. With just one mouse click, you can remove someone from your friends list and never see their updates or annoying statuses.
The real question is: is a friendship really over?
According to a news article in New York Times; "Not so in the real world. Even though research shows that it is natural, and perhaps inevitable"
It all depends on how long the friendship lasted and how good of a friend one person was to the other. Many people take facebook "defriending" very serious and get offended by this action but although Facebook makes it easier to get a point across, you can avoid a lot of confusion and many broken hearts by just confronting your friend.
