In an age where information gets disseminated at the speed of an upload and a click, there creates a whole new set of trials, tribulations and subsequent solutions for the gay and lesbian community.
Social networking sites and blogs provide a new medium for bullying prejudice and character assassination. This gets done en masse with a few clicks with the perpetrator usually never having to actually see the consequences of their actions. This type of harassment, behind the scenes yet in the public eye as well, makes an already difficult and emotional situation even more difficult and sometimes too much to bear. Such was the case with Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers University Student who took his own life.
Luckily for some there is help. Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, DailyStrength.org, and ItGetsBetter.org have stepped up in this age of information to provide much needed support online when people might need it most. Late at night when all seems hopeless, they are there to turn to and let people know they are not alone and they can and will get through it.
