Victoria Woodhull for President!
American Studies Professor Amanda Frisken was interviewed on NPR for a story about the first woman candidate for president, Victoria Woodhull.
Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927) nominated herself to run for the presidency in 1872. She was a successful stock broker on Wall Street, a radical advocate for woman's suffrage and free love. Woodhull is clearly one of the most out-spoken and fascinating characters in American history.
SUNY Old Westbury American Studies professor Amanda Frisken was interviewed on NPR's Radio Diaries on October 13, 2008.
Dr. Amanda Frisken is the author of Victoria Woodhull's Sexual Revolution: Political Theater and the Popular Press in Nineteenth Century America (2004).
